Fitting 'Nitesiters' / 'Daysiters'

Post by Ian » Sat Jan 19, 2013 4:15 pm

My eyes are not what they once were and I have great difficulty seeing plain iron sights especially in low light conditions or where there is lack of contrast with the target area. As I cant get on with optical sights I started fitting 'Nitesiters' to my pistols some time ago. These are dots and strips of florescent self adhesive material designed especially for pistol sights. Available in red, yellow, orange and green. Glow in the dark ones are also available in white

I fitted some to one of my Benjamin's this afternoon so thought I would take a few pictures. Apologies in advance for the quality of the pictures but I hope that it gives a rough idea of how simple the process is and how much easier the sights are to see

Nitesiters come as either a set of quite small dots or in this case a mixture of large dots and strips. I prefer green

The pack contains; the stickers, alcohol wipe, a small razor blade, some tooth picks, swabs and super glue type fluid

Image

Before starting the iron sights need to be cleaned with the alcohol wipe. If the gun has been wiped with something like a silicone cloth at some point then it will be difficult to get the stickers to adhere - some scrubbing with another kind of cleaner may be required beforehand (another good reason not to get silicone near your gun!)

Image

After leaving the alcohol wiped sights to dry for 5 minutes or so the stickers can be applied. They are prised gently from the card using the razor blade and then gently laid in position. Provided no pressure is applied when they are laid on the sight they can be repositions by pushing them at their edges with one of the toothpicks

Image

Once happy with the position pressure should be applied - carefully so as not to move them! Although they are stuck to the sights now the super glue type fluid needs to be applied to fix them so that they are resistant to knocks and dont peel off

Image

Applied with the swabs - the idea is to coat the face of the sticker and the edges to seal it

Image

Left to dry for 5 minutes and thats the job done!

I really do find that this simple accessory makes a big difference to my shooting

These are not available in the UK so you have to order from the States. They take about 2 -3 weeks to arrive and are about £14 posted. Customs dont seem to be interested in them

You could of course achieve a similar effect by making your own from scratch with some florescent card from Hobbycraft etc. Im not sure whether you would get any that was self adhesive or thin enough but it might be worth investigating if you want to save money and are good at fiddly jobs

Cheers

Excellent post.

It's a pity they are not available in this country. Maybe an e-mail to the manufacturer, asking if he'd sell a batch, might be worthwhile.

Placed on eBay they'd fly.

I have heard of people applying dabs of fluorescent paint before now, often used on fishing floats, but I don't think this is very durable.

Kind regards,

Hmmmm!!....I'm not a fan of Truglo sights on guns but they look quite good...may be worth a purchase to give 'em a try.
Thanks for the heads up and the excellent instruction pics!

I too suffer the same sight issues:-(
One of my other hobbies introduced me to super luminova and Tritium vial technology. Working with someone else I am building a sight incorporating a Tritium vial, I bought them from this guy here on the Candlepower forums:
http://www.cpfmarketplace.com/mp/showth ... rare-items

The snag with the vials (they work really well) is that they only glow in dim or dark situations. My intention now is to attach a small tritium vial to the centre of the front sight and place Super Luminova paste on either side of the vial and set the whole with a clear epoxy.

Fastening the vial to the front sight is pretty straightforward, I have discovered that automotive rear view mirror adhesive is UV setting so you can mess around with the position before setting it with UV light - theoretically getting it right the first time
It is also one fifth the cost of "specialised" glass to metal UV adhesive - it is £1.50 in Wilkinsons!

I bought these direct from the States arrived within 14 days - really good & easy to fit

The ones I got, you can charge up using an LED  torch meaning that they are great  when the light is fading

can thoroughly recomend the company and product

You might get a longer light out of them if you use a UV LED torch, freely available from eBay.

A very useful attachment, and still stumped why they are not available over herr.
